The Saltine Warrior, 1951, bronze, 10 feet

As a graduate student, Kaish won a commission to sculpt the symbol of Syracuse University. The Saltine Warrior, cast in bronze, depicts an Onondagan archer with bow aimed at the sky, a ten-foot-high portrait of explosive strength and nobility. Kaish engaged the  Onondaga tribal chiefs to find a model for the piece, resulting in an artistically honest depiction that was also widely supported by the Onondaga Nation. When the work was finished , Luise was honored at the Ceremony of the Green Corn at the reservation’s Long House. Today the sculpture resides permanently in front of Carnegie Library.
